Parkside Physical Therapy is pleased to offer gait evaluations for the runner or walker who is havingdifficulty
overcoming a running related injury. We perform the following services in order to fully assess and develop a strategy for
solving these sometimes perplexing and difficult problems.
Video taping
We video-tape the athlete while running at progressively greater speeds on a treadmill as increasing the velocity tends to
expose problems in the gait cycle. We video at multiple angles to observe alignment of the ankle, knee, hip and upper body
relative to the running surface and to body segments while in the motion of running. Then we are able to use the slow motion
capability of the camera to analyze the details of the running form.
Biomechanical analysis
The human body tends to develop muscular adaptations in response to activity and thus running
formor style will often predispose the runner to imbalances in strength and flexibility. In some cases an injury changes the
way a person runs leading to further injury. We look carefully at muscular strengthand tone, joint motion, symmetry and alignment.
Assessment and plan
After observing the running form and evaluating the runner's biomechanics, we are able to determinethe motion disorder and functional
or structural issues that are the underlying cause of or are contri-buting to the running injury. We may suggest a period of rest
or alternative activity; however, we understand the importance that running can have in the lives of active people, and our goal is
to help you continue to train wisely. We set up a detailed plan for getting you back on the trail or road free of running-related
pain and often with better form and efficiency. We may also make recommendations for your specific shoe needs or for custom made
or over the counter orthotics.
All of us at Parkside Physical Therapy are runners and we appreciate and celebrate your commitment to health and fitness.
