A fitness buzz phrase for several years, to Parkside Physical Therapists "core strength" is...
- In general terms, strengthening of abdominal, back, pelvic & hip musculature.
- More specifically, focused strengthening of deep, stabilizing muscle groups surrounding the spine & pelvis.
From an orthodepic standpoint, increased core strength:
- Promotes a "neutral," biomechanically stable spine & efficient use of postural musculature.
- Provides a stable, strong muscular base for optimal, safe & effective use of the extremities.
- Encourages appropriate articulation of the spine.
- Decreases soft tissue tension, strain, spasm & pain associated with improper postural loads.
We believe virtually everyone can benefit in myriad ways from an appropriate core strengthening program...
- Orthopedic patients (of course, adhering to all precautions & specific physician orders)
- Educating patients in the anatomy, physiology & recruitment of core musculature.
- Gradual & safe progression of stabilization & strengthening exercises as appropriate for the specific diagnosis.
- "Everyday folks" seeking preventative strategies to promote wellness and avoid spine & extremity injuries.
- Fitness enthusiasts, from the "weekend warrior" to the high-level, competitive athlete in the quest of improved
biomechanics, efficiency & decreased risk for injury.
- Begin with specific instruction in awareness and use of core musculature in a supine, supported position.
- Progress to more challenging postures & movements as patients demonstrate mastery of stabilization concepts.
- Incorporate appropriate spinal mobilization & limit inappropriate mobility (e.g., promoting cervical
& thoracic rotation while limiting rotation in the lumbar spine).
- Focus on functional movement & development of comprehensive, custom-tailored home exercise programs.
Whether we are treating a patient with a spine-related injury or instructing a group Pilates class, at Parkside
Physical Therapy we ALWAYS prioritize safety, proper biomechanics & client education. Our goal is to give each client the
understanding & tools they need to take the concepts & activities we practice at Parkside into their daily lives in
personally meaningful ways. At Parkside, core strengthening is at the heart of our practice.
