At Parkside Physical Therapy we have made arrangement to use the Salvation Army pool facilities for rehabilitation programs.
The pool environment offers the advantages of water for exercise and rehabilitation programs for many problems including:
Video taping
We video-tape the athlete while running at progressively greater speeds on a treadmill as increasing the velocity tends to
expose problems in the gait cycle. We video at multiple angles to observe alignment of the ankle, knee, hip and upper body
relative to the running surface and to body segments while in the motion of running. Then we are able to use the slow motion
capability of the camera to analyze the details of the running form.
Acute back pain and arthritis
Water provides a special medium for patients who have difficulty with a land based exercise program.
For back pain patients the buoyancy of water may allow the individual to move their spinal segments in an
"unloaded" manner which can alleviate the pain symptoms associated with compression of the vertebrae.
Joint injuries or surgery
Likewise, a person with a knee, ankle, or hip injury may be able to workout much more comfortably in the
water where weight bearing can be alleviated. For the athlete, water therapy can be a valuable way to maintain
cardiovascular fitness while rehabilitating a lower extremity joint or a muscle problem.
Cardiovascular fitness
A pool program can allow a participant to gain the benefits of continuous movement exercises which are
typically to difficult to perform on land but still provide to cardiovascular benefit.
Aquatics classes can provide a low cost and enjoyable alternative to land based exercise classes.
Many patients elect to continue their water programs independently. The Salvation Army pool has a
monthly rate and a per use rate.
